</b>The percentage of LMS tumors that recur or metastasize depend upon tumor site, size, grade, stage, presence of necrosis and hemorrhage, biopsy, tumor-positive margins, p53 gene damage, and, for ULMS, mitotic index.  Simply, stage and grade are the two most important prognostic factors for recurrence/metastasis. 

[However, another criterion is important for survival, and that is operability.  The luck that metastases or recurrences that do occur, can be removed surgically or ablated.  Metastasectomies can considerably increase survival time.]
